The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) is a computer controlled system providing a trough with end barriers to fabricate and characterize a closed-packed molecule/nanoparticle film of known thickness, down to a thickness of single molecules/nanoparticles. A notable feature of this technique is its capability to transfer a molecule film from air/liquid interface onto a solid support while maintaining a similar molecular orientation.
The troughs are made from a hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) which is resistant to all strong acids, and does not contaminate the subphase. The barriers are formed from hydrophilic materials (Delrin) to prevent leakage under the barriers during compression.
